Speaking at the annual summit for the National Police Chiefs' Council and the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners in London, the Home Secretary said the investment in police numbers "must deliver the crime cuts that [the public] so desperately want".
She said: "In three years’ time, when the 20,000 additional officers are through the door, people must see a difference. Less crime. Safer streets. No excuses. The public won’t accept them and neither should we."
Ms Patel also warned police chiefs they would be held to account with national, centrally set policing "outcomes".
