Despite being a small country of barely 20 million inhabitants, for at least the last seven decades Taiwan has been one of the hot spots of international politics. Its official name is not Taiwan, but "Republic of China", and today it is recognized by only 14 countries in addition to the Vatican. Not even its great ally in international politics, the United States, recognizes it as a sovereign country.
And this prompts several questions: What happened to the Taiwan that was once fully recognized by all the major western powers? What happened to the old Kuomintang party claim of Taiwan to be the legitimate government of all of mainland China?
And what is even more important, what can we expect after the enormous protests that have occurred in Hong Kong, and the recent presidential elections of January 2020 in Taiwan that resulted in the re-election of Tsai Ing Wen? In this video we give you all the details.
