‘COVID-19’ has become a dreaded term across the world. With close to 120,000 cases of the coronavirus exploding in the face of our planet, fresh deaths being reported across the world, the ‘novel’ virus is far from being gone.
Over 60 Indians have contracted the virus and most of them had a history of travel to Italy or contact with Italians. The exponential rise in cases in the European nation has shocked the world with at least 100 positive cases emerging every day.
In the latest development, over 150 Indians are stranded in Italy’s Milan airport and are sending SOS messages to seek help from the Indian government but are unable to leave the airport and escape the virus-marred country.
The Indians, mostly students, have spent more than 24 hours at the airport without food. Many of them were set to board an Air India aircraft and when they reached the airport, they were given boarding passes. But after they reached the aircraft, they were asked to furnish a COVID-19 clearance certificate.
This last-minute demand by the agencies has put them in a fix as they cannot go back to the city since it is dangerous as there has been an explosion of positive cases in Italy and now they are stuck at the airport.
“They are asking to provide our certificate that says we have tested negative for COVID-19 but it is not possible in Italy because they are already dealing with a lot of people who have tested positive and they are refusing to even test people who do not have symptoms. The Indian government is asking us to provide this certificate to board the flight and we are unable to provide it,” a girl said. The stranded Indians also claimed that there are no quarantine facilities at the airport.
“The situation here in Italy is serious. Indians want to go back. We have left our houses here to return home and we don’t have a place to go back. Some of our visas are also about to expire. If the visas expire, we won’t even get healthcare facilities,” another said.
The situation is so grim that their travel has been rescheduled for next week, one of them claimed, and they have no idea what to do or where to go.
“We are stuck here…the Air India flight is unwilling to take us back. We had booked our tickets a week ago. We were not informed that we have to come up with a certificate. Now they are saying our travel will be rescheduled for next Saturday. That means, we will have to go back and that is dangerous,” one of them said.
