So all-star weekend did not disappoint, well did it? Well from an entertainment standpoint, no it didn't. We saw the three-point contest come down to the last shot, with defending champion Devin booker losing at the buzzer to Buddy Hield, who was always gonna knock down that last shot wearing 24. We also saw one of the best dunk contest battles of all time, Aaron Gordon returned for his third appearance, and after missing out on the trophy 4 years back in a memorable faceoff with Zach Lavine. AG was on a mission to claim what he felt was rightfully his last night, unfortunately in an era where the dunk contest has become a joke. He's found himself competing against two players, who any other year would've unanimously won the contest. Not to take anything away from Derrick Jones Jr and Zach Lavine, but Aaron Gordon not having a dunk contest title on his CV is absolutely criminal. Nevermind the masterclass he put on from 2016, last night Aaron Gordon had 5 fifties, 250 out of a possible 250 points. Then dunked over Tacko Fall the tallest active player in the NBA, and didn't win the competition.
Afterward in the press conference, he said that he feels he should have two trophies and that he's done with the contest. And rightfully so, he put on two of the best performances and dunk contest history and has been robbed of arguably two trophies.

But the biggest blow of all is in response to Aaron Gordon's robbery. Ja Morant who was hesitant to participate this year has given every indication that he won't participate in the dunk contest either.
With several tweets, calling out the judges with a tweet saying 'yall just made my decision easier' he followed that up with a 'it's a no from me gif' until lastly replying Nah to a tweet from Rachel Nichols, that said we need to see Zion vs Ja in next year's dunk contest.
I mean this is just sad to see though, Ja has some of the most bounce, and crazy athletic dunks in the league right now. And what we saw during the at the end of the rising stars challenge, I interpreted as a teaser trailer for what you'd have thought was the inevitable dunk contest matchup, between Ja Morant and Zion Williamson. Which is exactly what everyone wants to see
The two have a history dating back to early high school, once upon a time AAU teammates. They were the 1 and 2 picks in the 2019 NBA draft and are now competing against each other for Rookie of the year.
So I'm just hoping that Ja has a change of heart because he in the dunk contest period is something we all wanna see. Even if him going up against Zion is too much to ask for, surely one appearance from him, during his long NBA career isn't.
Earlier in the season, Zion also revealed that he had no real interest in participating in the dunk contest, however, it seems like recently he had a change of heart. Saying that he's open to participating next year in 2021, on the condition that his team is winning games. I feel like an inevitable dunk contest matchup is the rematch between him and Hamidou Diallo. The two went at it in the ballislife dunk contest back in the high school, Zion took the dub then. But Diallo his rookie season last year, won the NBA dunk contest. And announced he wants to defend his title in a long-awaited rematch with Zion Williamson.

Anyways I do feel like Derrick Jones Jr deserves more respect, whether you believe Aaron Gordon was robbed or not. Jones definitely put up a performance worthy of winning the competition, it's just a shame that his win had to come at the expense of Aaron Gordon. In my opinion, it's not so much that Aaron Gordon was robbed on both of these occasions because Zach Lavine went crazy in 2016 too make no mistake about it. But the robbery is the fact that he has put on two of the greatest dunk contest performances of all time, and doesn't have the trophy to validate that.
