The three F-35 variants have similar performance characteristics, and are mainly distinguished by their different basing requirements. As a result, the F-35B and F-35C variants have unique ways to take off and land.
The variation between models allows military forces to achieve service-specific mission capability, while still taking advantage the economies of scale that result from the parts and processes that are common to all three variants. All three variants are supersonic, low observable stealth fighters that all have the same advanced avionics required to execute multirole missions and the support of the F-35 sustainment technologies.
HX-hanke - HX Program – new fighters for Finland by 2025
The planned service life of Hornets, Finland's current fighters, will end by 2030. The HX Program was set up to replace the current fleet with new fighters.
Fighters are a significant part of Finland’s defence capability
The primary purpose of Finland’s defence capability is to establish deterrence against the use of military force and the threat of its use, as well as to repel attacks on Finland. To perform this task, Finland needs fighters. They are an essential part of the air defence system and Defence Forces’ capability in engaging land- and sea-based targets. The fighter fleet’s capabilities also supplement the Defence Forces’ intelligence, surveillance and command environment.
HX Challenge in English
The HX Challenge testing and evaluation event for HX fighter candidates will be held in Finland in January and February 2020. The event will take place mainly in Pirkkala and will be hosted by the Satakunta Air Command.
The HX Challenge is being held in Finland so that each candidate’s performance can be verified under Finnish conditions and through tests designed in Finland. This procedure guarantees that the performance of each candidate’s systems and aircraft can be evaluated fairly.
The testing event will verify the performance claims made in the responses to the call for tenders, along with any performance values previously verified in laboratory tests. This way, it will be possible to assess the performance of the aircraft, systems and sensors in the Finnish operating environment. The Finnish operating environment and practices may also differ from those of other users in terms of weather and lighting conditions.
The testing event will evaluate the multi-role fighters and their systems on the ground and in the air, and at take-off and landing. Each candidate has been given five working days to demonstrate its performance in Finland.
HX Challenge suomeksi
HX-kandidaattien testaus- ja todennustapahtumaa HX Challenge järjestetään Suomessa tammi-helmikuun 2020 aikana. Tapahtuman pääpaikka on Satakunnan lennosto Pirkkalassa.
HX Challenge järjestetään Suomessa, jotta jokaisen kandidaatin suorituskykyä voidaan todentaa Suomen olosuhteissa ja suomalaisten laatimin testein. Tällä menettelyllä taataan ehdokkaille tasapuolinen heidän esittämien konseptien, koneen järjestelmien ja koneen suorituskyvyn verifiointi.
